The Yankees Win 5-4 on Opening Day - Read the Game Recap!
The Yankees pulled off a narrow 5-4 victory on opening day against the most hated franchise in baseball, The Houston (Trash Can) Astros.
The game started off rough for the Yankees as Nestor Cortez couldn't have looked worse in the first two innings, giving up four earned runs. However, after the first two innings, Cortez was able to pitch three scoreless innings, passing the game off to the bullpen that did fantastic and didn't allow another run the rest of the game!
The Yankees slowly crawled back into the game, propelled by the electrifying performance of Juan Soto in his stellar Yankees debut. With one hit and two walks, Soto made a significant impact in the 5th inning with an RBI to put the Yankees on the scoreboard. The Astros then gifted the Yankees two runs as they hit Rizzo with the bases loaded, bringing in Cabrera, and then walked Volpe with the bases loaded, bringing in Torres. The Yankees kept the momentum as the next inning, Oswaldo Cabrera, hit a 381-foot homerun to tie the game at 4-4. The winning run came in the 7th inning as Alex Verdugo hit a sacrifice flyball out to deep left-field, allowing Aaron Judge, aka "The Captain," to score the go-ahead run and make the game 5-4 Yankees.
The game was sealed by the Yankees' new star, Juan Soto! With runners on first and second in the bottom of the 9th inning, the Astros hit a single into right-field. With the runner on second rounding third and heading home, Juan Soto threw a perfect throw from deep right-field to Jose Trevino, allowing him to tag the runner at the very last second before he scored the tieing run!
There is no better feeling for a Yankees fan than seeing the Yankees beat the Astros, so I can personally say it was a great opening day of baseball!
